Water with a pH below 7 is acidic and corrosive. Raising the pH will neutralise the water, removing the metallic taste and pipe corrosion, and can also reduce any iron or manganese contamination.
The backwashing head has the advantage of remixing the media and removing any debris or iron/manganese. Backwashing the units stops the media compressing and stops it going hard which can happen with in/out systems.

This pH neutralisation unit is supplied partailly assembled for shipping. Some assembly will be required. All components and instructions will be supplied.

Birm is a relatively inexpensive material which can be used for iron and manganese removal by catalytic oxidation. It requires a pH of 7 or more for iron removal and pH 8 for manganese removal. It is advised not to use Birm in combination with chlorination and the water should be free of oil and hydrogen sulphide. If the pH of the water is too low pH correction maybe required. Birm is a light, inexpensive media but often doesn’t last quite as long as other natural media.

Iron Removal Criteria
pH: 7 - 8.5 ( High pH conditions may cause the formulation of colloidal iron which is very difficult to filter out)
Alkalinity: greater than twice the combined sulphate and chloride
Organic matter: <4-5 ppm
Dissolved oxygen: at least 15% of the iron or manganese content less than 0.5% chlorine, no H2S, oil or polyphosphates
Max. Temperature 38C

Manganese Removal Criteria
pH: 8-9
Alkalinity: greater than twice the combined sulphate and chloride
Organic matter: <4-5 ppm
Dissolved oxygen: at least 15% of the iron or manganese content less than 0.5% chlorine, no H2S, oil or polyphosphates
Max. Temperature 38C

Media life expectancy is 2 to 3 years.

Filox can be used for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide removal by catalytic oxidation. It is a robust media allowing a faster service flow rate than other iron removal media. A pH of 7 is recommended for iron removal and 8 for manganese removal. It is a heavy media requiring a strong backwash. Adding other media is possible but can impair it’s service flow rate.

Iron Removal Criteria
pH: 7-9
Iron content: <15 ppm
Oxygen:15% of iron and manganese content

Manganese Removal Criteria
pH: 8-9
Manganese content: <3 ppm
Oxygen:15% of iron and manganese content

Hydrogen Sulphide Removal Criteria
pH: 6.8 - 9
Hydrogen Sulphide content: <7 ppm

Filox is an excellant choice when tackling Iron, Iron and managanese or all three. If dealing only with manganese or only hydrogen sulphide there are better options (see seperate section).

Filox may not be the best option if you are struggling to get your pH up to the required level or you don't wish to use a seperate pH system. Filox is quite heavy so requires a high backwashing rate - if you are unable to produce the nessecary backwashing rate again you may have to look at different options or concider using two smaller systems in parallel to achieve the correct back washing rate.

NeutrAcalC systems are available in different sizes from a small 10" housing with a 4 Lpm Flow rate to a huge 12" Diameter x 54" High with 113 Lpm flow rate.

The Technology
NeutrAcalC is a water treatment technology using specifically designed beads to combat the effects of hard water and inhibit formation of limescale. Each bead is covered in imperfections called media templates that attract minerals (Limescale, carbonates) and combine them to form micro-crystals that slowly grow. The inactive microscopic crystal particles then break off and float freely through the system. These crystals make their way through the plumbing system without sticking to pipes, fixtures, valves or heating elements.

The NeutrAcalC technology differs from a conventional water softener which uses ion exchange to remove the limescale forming calcium and magnesium from water and replacing them with sodium ions. This ion exchange process requires a water meter, brine regeneration and a drain to flush during regeneration while NeutrAcalC requires none of these.

Advantages

  • Stops limescale forming
  • Green & Eco-friendly: no use of regenerants
  • No Salt required
  • No chloride in the water
  • No rinsing “water saving”
  • No regeneration, so no drain required
  • No electricity, compact solution & easy installation
  • No change in the chemical composition “healthy minerals retained”
  • No effect on corrosion
  • Maintain the efficiency of your boiler and heating system
  • Protects appliances that use hot water
  • Independently tested up to 99.6% efficiency using German DVGW protocol

The NeutrAcalC is not an ion exchange softener therefore will not produce soft water, however it will remove the effects of limescale produced by hard water.

Tannins are a common class of organic compounds in upland water and give the water a yellow/brown tint. In highland (peaty) areas where water runs off peat the water can be virtually brown. Organic scavenging systems use resin to hold these organics which are periodically backwashed away with brine. Typically every 25 litres of resin will take out 2000ppm of organic colour before it needs regenerating.

Turbidex is a unique natural clinoptilolite ore that has many outstanding advantages over common filter sand used for sediment reduction. Turbidex is very angular, rough surfaced and has microporous void spaces as small as 3 microns. This creates a surface area over 100 times greater than sand and can reduce suspended solids down to 5 microns or less (sand filters down to about 40 microns). Turbidex prevents the rapid build up of head loss and binding associated with sand filters and allows longer periods between back washes. Because of its high porosity and hydrophilic nature, Turbidex can operate at much higher flow rates than conventional sediment filters.
